The answer came back this afternoon: the white powder mailed to the Delaware Department of Elections office in Dover was not hazardous.
State officials announced today that testing determined the substance posed no hazard. They did not say what the substance was. The FBI and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are still investigating who sent it, and why.
How we got here: on Thursday, October 15, an employee at the department’s office on South Governors Avenue opened an envelope and found white powder inside. The office was evacuated, the employee went through decontamination, and the envelope went off for testing. The first tests were negative. The results released today close the loop.
All Department of Elections offices are operating normally, and early voting in Delaware opens tomorrow, Thursday, October 22, exactly as scheduled. Whatever somebody meant to disrupt, it did not work.
