UPDATE — MILFORD: Ross Elementary may not survive its own fire.

Superintendent Travis Moorman told Milford City Council Monday night the damage to Lulu M. Ross Elementary is "catastrophic" — in his words, "not much salvageable." He has asked the city engineer to make the condemnation call a priority, and council voted to waive the demolition fees if it comes to that.

Ross's 600 students are out all week, no classes in person or online. The district's goal is to have them learning again next week, in other buildings. Mispillion Elementary students, next door, went back today. The Food Bank of Delaware is helping cover meals for Ross families this week.

The State Fire Marshal says the fire started in the Kent wing early Sunday. Finding the cause could take days — or months.

A school Milford families have gone to since 1957 is now a demolition decision. We will keep following it.
