Two men are charged after police say they were caught dumping hundreds of tires out of a U-Haul box truck at SEPTA's North Philadelphia station late Monday night.
Officers went to the station lot on the 1400 block of West Indiana Avenue about 11:48 p.m. Monday after a report of illegal dumping, and found an estimated 200 to 350 tires unloaded on the property. Police identified the men as Charles Arttaway, 52, of Philadelphia, and Paul Gamble, of Darby. Both are charged with criminal mischief, criminal conspiracy and scattering rubbish.
Arttaway told NBC10 he was offered $40 at a gas station to help unload the truck and didn't believe he was doing anything wrong. Police say the lot is a long-standing dumping spot — the department's Neighborhood Services Unit has handled nine tire-and-box-truck cases there in about six weeks.
