The call came in around 2:45 this morning, while Wilmington slept — a rowhome burning at Eighth Avenue and Maryland Avenue, and the words no dispatcher ever wants to say: people might be trapped inside.
By the time the first crews rolled up, the fire had the whole house. Three stories of a middle-unit townhome, fire on every floor — not a room, not a corner, all of it. And Wilmington’s firefighters did what they always do. They went in anyway.
They went in to hit the fire where it lived and to search, because if somebody was in there, every second was already borrowed. But the fire had too much of a head start. The heat turned unbearable, the house started coming apart under them — the second floor partially collapsed — and the order every firefighter hates came down: fall back. The fight moved to the street. Defensive. Water from outside, on a fire that had already won the building.
When the flames finally broke and crews pushed back in, they found them. Two residents, dead in a bedroom.
Neighbors say the home belonged to a couple. Family stood out on Maryland Avenue in the morning light and said the words nobody should ever have to say out loud. “My older sister’s gone,” a relative told CBS3. “Her and her husband.”
Their names have not been released. Battalion Chief Robert Pryor said identifications are still being made. Two firefighters were hurt — both minor, one of them heat-related — treated and released. Fire Chief John Looney was on scene as forensic units worked the block well past 9 AM, still looking for answers. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
A rowhome is a Delaware kind of house — a family’s whole life stacked three floors high, wall to wall with the neighbors’ whole lives. This morning, on Eighth Avenue, one of those lives ended in the dark — twice over. A husband and a wife who went to sleep in their own home and never woke up in it again.
We’ve reached out to the Wilmington Fire Department for comment and will update this story when they respond — and when the couple’s names are released, we will say them here.
Hold each other a little tighter tonight, Wilmington.
