🎃 THE DAY IN THE 302

Halloween in the 302 was a full, heavy day — and it started with good news the night was still holding. Delaware State Police named the 19-year-old Ellendale man killed in Wednesday’s Lincoln crash: Zyadon Briddell. State Police and Delaware Online together closed the loop on Thursday night’s I-95 tragedy in Wilmington, where a 19-year-old from Pottstown, Pennsylvania died trying to cross the northbound lanes near Frawley Stadium. Washington, D.C. police charged a man with first-degree murder in a bus-stop killing on Minnesota Avenue — a story no other outlet had reported when we posted it — and Prince George’s County named two of the three men killed in separate attacks there on Thursday. A Henrico County woman died in a pedestrian crash near Richmond International Airport, and in James City County, a school bus rolled onto its side with four preschoolers aboard — and every one of them went home to their families. The page also launched two standing features today: the 302 Photo Hunt, asking neighbors to photograph 58 Delaware places, and a new Unsolved Cases board carrying five Delaware cases a tip can still solve. The Still Missing 302 board itself changed shape: Kortney Dollard came off it — located, her Gold Alert cancelled — and every name on the board now carries a face. The roster stands at 16. Beyond the region, all six national stories ran: a deadly shooting inside a California Spirit Halloween store, Alaska’s two Dan Sullivans, the $6.3 billion Binance heist, Pope Leo XIV’s historic mail-in ballot, Intel’s worst day on Wall Street in 52 years, and a building Super El Niño. The lighter side closed the evening: a British strongman in a Michael Myers costume pulling a car for a serious cause, and Sleepy Hollow’s real Headless Horseman — where the horse is the star. Early voting runs its final day tomorrow, Sunday, November 1, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., ahead of Election Day on Tuesday, November 3. Here is the full record. 🎃

Delaware State Police say drivers called 9-1-1 at about 8:15 p.m. Thursday, October 29, reporting a man walking along I-95 near Frawley Stadium. As troopers were arriving, the man tried to run across the northbound lanes and was struck by a GMC Canyon pickup.

The man, 19, from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, was taken to a hospital and died. His name is being withheld until his family is notified. The driver of the Canyon, a 59-year-old Wilmington man, was not hurt.

I-95 was closed for about three hours. The Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating. Witnesses, or anyone with video, are asked to contact Corporal M. DiMaio at (302) 365-8370, or Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) 847-3333.

This story ran in this morning’s Morning Minute; the full package was built today from both sources. If State Police release the young man’s name, we will update the record.

🕯️ LINCOLN — THE 19-YEAR-OLD KILLED IN WEDNESDAY’S CRASH IS IDENTIFIED AS ZYADON BRIDDELL

The 19-year-old Ellendale man killed in Wednesday night’s Lincoln crash has a name: Zyadon Briddell, 19.

A life cut short. Our thoughts are with his family and everyone who loved him.

State Police say Briddell was driving west on Johnson Road on Wednesday, October 28, at about 10:20 p.m. when a Ford F-150 heading north on Dupont Boulevard failed to stop at the red light and struck his Chevrolet Cavalier on the driver’s side. He was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries and died the next day, October 29. The F-150’s driver, a 22-year-old Georgetown man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. State Police have announced no charges.

The Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate. Witnesses, or anyone with video, are asked to contact Master Corporal K. Argo at (302) 703-3264, or Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) 847-3333.

One clarification we are making plainly, because the names are close: Zyadon Briddell of Ellendale is not Jayce Briddell, the 15-year-old from Dover on the Still Missing 302 board. They are different people, and Jayce’s case is unchanged — he remains listed as missing.

Our thoughts are with Zyadon’s family and everyone who loved him.

Everything in this update comes from the Delaware State Police’s official release; if anything changes, we will update our readers.

William Louis Chase Jr., 47, of Northwest D.C., is charged with first-degree murder, felony assault on a police officer and emergency personnel, and assault with a dangerous weapon (gun). The officers involved are on administrative leave, and MPD’s Force Investigation Team and the U.S. Attorney’s Office are reviewing the officer-involved shooting.

All of this is from MPD’s official release. As of our posting this morning, no other outlet had reported it — this was the first report out. If anything changes, we update here.

Up front: this story rests on one source — WRIC 8News, reporting statements from Henrico County Police. We ran it today on a one-time basis with that sourcing stated plainly, and we will update if police release more.

Henrico County Police told WRIC that officers were called around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, October 29, to the 5700 block of Williamsburg Road, near Airport Drive, for a crash involving a pedestrian. They found a woman down in the roadway with obvious signs of trauma. She died at the scene. Eastbound lanes in the area were closed while officers worked the scene.

Police say the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with detectives. Police have not released the woman’s name or the cause of the crash, and say the investigation is in its early stages.

It was a single-vehicle crash; no other vehicle was involved. Police say the bus was headed to the Bright Beginnings preschool program at Clara Byrd Baker Elementary when it crashed at 4400 Centerville Road, James City County, at 9:20 a.m. Friday, October 30.

Bystanders helped the children off the bus. County fire medics checked them on scene for minor injuries; none went to a hospital, and all were reunited with their families. Centerville Road was closed from the 4400 to the 4700 block for an extended period, and the crash remains under investigation.

The driver and a female aide went to an area hospital with apparently minor injuries. The driver, Mark Callazzo, 37, of James City County, is charged with reckless driving / failure to maintain control. He was released on a summons.

FAIRFIELD, CALIFORNIA — DEVELOPING: A SHOOTING INSIDE A SPIRIT HALLOWEEN STORE KILLS A MOTHER-TO-BE AND WOUNDS SIX

Fairfield Police say the gunfire broke out around 8:30 p.m. inside the store at the Solano Town Center mall, full of last-minute Halloween shoppers. The woman killed was identified as Constance Hages, 31. Family members told police she was pregnant.

Three victims — ages 16, 19 and 32 — were in critical condition Saturday afternoon. A 23-year-old man was stable, and two others were treated and released.

Police say early information points to a targeted incident involving one suspect, and detectives were still working to identify the shooter Saturday. The FBI’s Sacramento office sent its evidence response team to assist. The store remains closed.

This is a developing story, and it is labeled that way here because it is still moving.

🗳️ ALASKA — TWO MEN NAMED DAN SULLIVAN ARE RUNNING FOR THE U.S. SENATE, AND THE FBI IS ASKING QUESTIONS

Alaska has two men named Dan Sullivan running for the U.S. Senate — and now the FBI is knocking on doors about it.

Senator Dan Sullivan is the Republican incumbent. Dan J. Sullivan is a retired teacher from Petersburg, a fishing town reachable only by boat or plane, running a long-shot campaign under nearly the same name. His campaign is now the subject of a federal criminal probe.

On Friday, an FBI agent visited a Petersburg boat dealership asking whether donor Charles Flint felt “misled” about which Sullivan he gave $500 to. Flint’s answer: not at all. “I don’t think there’s any confusion,” he said. “Everybody knows who the incumbent is.”

The Justice Department’s probe has been under way for several months, and prosecutors have pushed for a court order to isolate certain ballots. Reporting on the case has included an allegation that allies of former Representative Mary Peltola recruited the second Sullivan to split the vote; Peltola denied it Friday, calling it deeply offensive, garbage, and a smear campaign. Nobody has been charged.

💸 THE BINANCE HEIST — $6.3 BILLION GONE IN ABOUT 20 MINUTES

$6.3 billion, gone in about 20 minutes. The biggest crypto heist in history just hit Binance — and investigators say it looks like North Korea’s work.

Hackers drained the world’s largest crypto exchange late Thursday. Blockchain firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis say the attack bore similarities to previous thefts blamed on North Korea. North Korea routinely denies involvement in crypto thefts.

Binance co-CEO Richard Teng said the “complex attack” may have begun with a single compromised software engineer’s laptop, giving hackers a path into the systems that process withdrawals. Investigators found additional breaches as they dug in. Binance halted withdrawals and says company funds will cover customers in full.

The race to freeze the money: stablecoin issuer Tether froze nearly $1.57 billion linked to the heist, and Circle froze $800 million more — about $2.4 billion in total. Bitcoin fell more than 4 percent and Ethereum more than 5 percent on Thursday before a partial recovery Friday, and rival exchanges including Coinbase and Kraken scrambled to tighten their own defenses.

Pope Leo XIV, the Chicago-born pontiff, has cast a ballot by mail in the midterm elections, the Vatican confirmed Friday — the first time a pope has ever voted in an American election.

Leo, 71, is registered to vote in Illinois under his birth name, Robert Francis Prevost, and requested his ballot October 3, per the Will County Clerk’s office. “In keeping with this long-standing practice of civic participation, he has submitted his mail-in ballot in Chicago,” the Vatican said. “The Holy Father expresses his belief in the right and the duty of citizens to participate in democratic processes.”

The Vatican did not say which candidates he chose. Illinois voters Tuesday pick a successor to retiring Senator Dick Durbin and decide whether to re-elect Governor JB Pritzker.

Leo was elected in May 2025 and leads the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics. Earlier this month, on October 13, he underwent surgery in which the lower lobe of his right lung was removed after a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma; no further therapy was needed.

📉 INTEL — THE CHIPMAKER’S WORST DAY ON WALL STREET IN 52 YEARS

Intel — the rest of the story.

Intel stock plunged nearly 29 percent Friday, closing at $65.76 — its worst single day since 1974 — even though the chipmaker beat earnings expectations and data-center revenue jumped nearly 80 percent, to $7.3 billion.

The problem is the outlook. AI data centers are buying up so much of the world’s memory chips that laptops and desktops have gotten pricier, so fewer are selling. Intel expects PC shipments to drop about 12 percent in 2026 and another 10 percent in 2027, and its forecast for the rest of the year — $15 to $16 billion for the fourth quarter — came in well short of the roughly $17 billion Wall Street expected.

The forecast also absorbs a shutdown at Intel’s plant in Kiryat Gat, Israel, where an explosion killed two workers earlier this month. And the drop landed on the U.S. government, too: the government’s roughly 10 percent stake in Intel lost about $12 billion on paper in the plunge — though it is still worth more than three times the $20.47 a share the government paid. Memory prices may keep climbing through next year.

🌊 SUPER EL NIÑO — THE PACIFIC IS BUILDING WHAT COULD BE THE STRONGEST EL NIÑO ON RECORD

The Pacific is cooking up a Super El Niño — and NOAA says there is an 83 percent chance it becomes the strongest since record-keeping began in 1950.

Super Typhoon In-Fa moved past the northernmost Northern Mariana Islands on Saturday at Category 4 strength, having weakened from super typhoon status — the seventh super typhoon to form in the western Pacific this year, in an ocean basin supercharged by El Niño’s warming waters. Temperatures in the central Pacific ran more than 2 degrees Celsius above normal in September — Super El Niño territory.

For perspective: the most super typhoons ever in a single year is 11 — in 1997 and 1965, both Super El Niño years. Guam and the Northern Marianas have already taken impacts from six tropical systems in 2026.

NOAA expects a Super El Niño declaration later this year. What it means for a Delaware winter is a watch item at this point, not a forecast — we will carry it here as the science firms up.

💪 THE LIGHTER SIDE — MICHAEL MYERS PULLED A CAR DOWN A STREET IN ENGLAND, FOR A SERIOUS REASON

Michael Myers pulled a car down a street in England on Thursday, and the tow strap was the strongman himself.

Michael Myers pulled a car — the lighter side, with a serious reason.
Michael Myers pulled a car — the lighter side, with a serious reason.

British strongman John Stephenson, 55, strapped himself to the bumper of a 1.5-ton Renault — by the tip of his penis — and pulled it down an empty street near York, dressed as Michael Myers. No hands. The ex-kickboxer calls it his most painful stunt ever — and this is a man who once pulled a 2-ton car 164 feet using only his testicles.

Why? A serious reason: raising awareness for male victims of domestic abuse, with the group ManKind Initiative. “Like the character of Michael Myers, many victims feel forced to wear a mask — pretending everything is fine on the outside while carrying a crushing, agonizing weight alone on the inside,” he said.

His advice to copycats: “I’d encourage anyone thinking about doing it to not.”

🐎 THE LIGHTER SIDE — THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN OF SLEEPY HOLLOW, WHERE THE HORSE IS THE STAR

Yes, the Headless Horseman leading a high school football team onto the field in Sleepy Hollow, New York is real — and the horse is the star.

Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. (photo: SteveStrummer / Wikimedia Commons, CC0).
Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. (photo: SteveStrummer / Wikimedia Commons, CC0).

At every Sleepy Hollow High home game, a headless rider on a big black horse gallops the team out. Videos of it have racked up millions of views this fall. The rider is Leora Dillon, 56, of Warwick, who rescues and trains horses for a living and works as an ER nurse “to pay for my ponies.” Her head hides inside the costume’s collar, behind a veil she can barely see through — so she trusts Eagle, a rescue horse who arrived underweight and traumatized in 2017 and now knows the routine cold. “The horse could do it without me,” she says. “He’s truly the star of the whole thing.”

The Horseman has appeared at Sleepy Hollow games since 2009, and Dillon has been in the saddle for the past three years. October is her busy season: nearly 200 Horseman appearances booked this month alone — block parties, festivals and parades on top of the games.

How to shoot it — the rules.

The 302 Photo Hunt launched today and runs November 1 through December 15. Team Murphy Media needs photos of 58 Delaware places that turn up in our stories — police stations, courthouses, hospitals, bridges. DJ was fixing to drive 240 miles to shoot them all himself. Then came the better idea: you’re already standing next to half of them.

How it works: find your town on the shot list — it is on the cards in the photos on the page post. Take the picture on foot, from a public place: phone sideways, daytime, front of the building, sign in the frame if it has one, the original photo at full quality — no screenshots, no close-ups of faces or license plates, and never from a moving car. Send it in on Messenger to the Team Murphy Media 302 page, or by email to [email protected], and say so if you want your name in the closing credit post.

Ten winners are picked when the hunt closes on December 15 — prizes for the best photos, and more winners drawn from the other usable photos. One prize per person. The full shot list, the prize details, the safety rules and the fair rules are all on the cards in the page post.

And the Week 1 board is already up: 0 of 58 spots claimed. Zero. Every single spot is still open, and the first person to send in a spot owns that spot on the board. Smyrna and Clayton — our own backyard — have five spots between them. Georgetown has only three spots on the whole list, the easiest town in Delaware to sweep clean. Dover has twelve sitting open; Wilmington has ten. Somebody’s town gets on this board first. Make it yours.

📜 FOLLOW-UP — GREENWOOD: THE STATE IS STILL LOOKING FOR THE FAMILY

A short follow-up to a story in yesterday’s Record. Delaware’s Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs is still seeking possible descendants after the skeletal remains of at least three people — an adult man, an adult woman and a child, buried sometime between 1780 and 1900 — were found on September 16 during a pool excavation on Hickman Road near Greenwood. Anyone who may be related, or who knows of an unmarked family cemetery on that property, can contact the Division at 302-736-7400 by December 11.

🏡 STILL MISSING 302

The roster moved once today, and it was the best kind of move. A deep missing-persons check this morning found what two earlier scans had missed: Kortney Dollard, 35, of Bear, was located on Wednesday, October 28, and New Castle County Police cancelled her Gold Alert that evening. Her case closed on Day 2. She is off the board and on its cleared list, where she belongs. Two boards were posted today in her place: an updated board this morning, and then a new faces edition this afternoon — every name on the board now carries a small official photo beside it, because a face is what stops the scroll and gets recognized. Two of the sixteen — Kyle Torrance and Jachaela Carroll — have no photo police have released; their spots carry a NO PHOTO RELEASED marker instead. No invented faces, ever. A final complete check tonight found no other change: no new case added, no other case closed. The roster stands at 16 — 15 minors and one adult.
