CORRECTION (Fri, Oct 30): This post first said Elkton. One reader told us it was North East. Then another. By the third and fourth, we stopped taking the police report's word for it and checked the map ourselves — Route 272 at Rogers Road is in North East, and our readers were right. The Maryland State Police release we reported from says Elkton; that's where the error started, and we printed it. The location below is fixed, and we're sorry. — TMM 302
💔 A 13-year-old girl walking to school was killed in a hit-and-run this morning in Cecil County, and Maryland State Police say the driver was detained about 30 minutes later.
State Police say shortly before 7 a.m. today, Thursday, October 29, troopers went to Route 272 (North East Road) at Rogers Road in North East, where a northbound 2011 Mini Cooper struck the girl after she entered the roadway — then fled. She died at a local hospital. Police believe she was walking to school.
Troopers found the Mini Cooper and its driver at a nearby business complex. The driver was detained; charges are pending consultation with the Cecil County State's Attorney's Office. Route 272 was closed between US 40 and Lums Road for about three hours.
The MSP Crash Team is investigating. Anyone with information can call the North East Barrack: 410-996-7800. Callers may remain confidential.
Our condolences to her family.
