🚗 An 82-year-old man is dead and his wife critically injured after their SUV crashed through two fences, slammed into an occupied home, and burst into flames in Burlington County.
New Jersey State Police say George C. Sears Jr. of Toms River suffered an apparent medical emergency Monday afternoon on Route 563 in Woodland Township, lost control, and hit the house. The fire spread from the SUV to the home before firefighters put it out.
His wife, Susan A. Sears, 76, was flown to Cooper University Hospital in critical condition. The homeowners — a couple in their 80s — were inside and got out unharmed, but their home is badly damaged.
Neighbors say that curve sees two to three crashes a year. One has spent his own money on warning lights, begging the county for a guardrail: "If I have to put logs up so we don't die just to get our mail, something's wrong."
