76% of pedestrian fatalities happen in the dark — and this weekend, Delaware's streets fill with kids trick-or-treating after dark. 🎃
October is National Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month, and the Delaware Office of Highway Safety is asking everyone to take a few extra precautions this Halloween:
• Drivers: slow down and stay alert — excited kids can dart into the road, especially in neighborhoods.
• Kids should cross at corners and crosswalks, and look both ways.
• Help kids be seen: flashlights or glow sticks, reflective tape on costumes and treat bags, light-colored clothing.
• Costumes should fit right so nobody trips — and face paint beats a mask, which can block a child's vision.
• Little ones should trick-or-treat with an adult.
Per NHTSA, 17% of children 14 and under killed in traffic crashes in 2024 were pedestrians. Let's bring every Delaware kid home safe this Halloween.
